The Cattery Chronicles: Issue 6 - Cat Kneading

5/6/2024

Here at The Cattery Cat Shelter, we see a lot of cat behaviours. One of the main ones we see though, is cat kneading. This issue of the Cattery Chronicles will take you through the hows and whys of cat kneading, but first...

Do you love a cat who makes biscuits? Then meet Joslyn! Joslyn is a one woman baking factory who loves being pet, and can’t help but start kneading and purring in return. She’s sweet and affectionate, plus super playful if you bring out the cat toys that she loves. To meet her, email us at [email protected] and we'll see what we can do! We expect this void kitty to go quickly to a new home, so fingers crossed.

What is cat kneading?

Also known as 'cat biscuits' or the 'baking factory', cat kneading refers to the behaviour usually made by kittens seeking milk from their mother. Paws and claws are flexed in a repetitive pattern, usually on a soft blanket or even your leg, as a sign of happiness. Cats can also be seen kneading fabrics when trying to get comfortable in their bed, helping them to relax.

Why is my cat kneading me?

First and foremost, if your cat is kneading you, it's an honor. Cats often knead their favorite companions as a sign of affection, as a call back from their time with their mother as a kitten. The act of kneading also leaves scent markers behind, which is a territorial claim from your kitty cat. Lucky you!

There's also talk from feline experts that cats knead to release a feel-good hormone that they'd get when nursing from their mothers. Sounds like a double win to us!
