Paulie and Jupiter ~ A Love Affair

Paulie and Jupiter are two of our residents. For those of you that don't know their story, but keep seeing them in the comic or on merchandise, we thought we would share again!

Paulie was a tough little feral kitten found at a bar. He was brought to us at a very young age but no matter how much we tried, or any of the tricks we used, we just could not tame him.  He became a staple in the teen room, someone that was so squishy and wonderful, but we couldn't get close to.  He started a gang.  All of the shy cats would hang with him.  If they weren't with him and he cried out his little squeak of a meow, they would all come running.

Jupiter came to us two years later and she was also a kitten that we just couldn't tame.  When she moved into the teen room, she quickly became one of Paulie's TWO girlfriends.  Oh, the drama.  You might think we're adding a human spin to this but we aren't.  The looks one girl would give the other when Paulie was cuddling one, could kill.  The trickery that happened to get Paulie to move from cuddling one to the other should be studied.  It was so calculated and fascinating.  There was definitely a Soap Opera going on in our Teen Room.

Fast forward to August of 2017 and a hurricane headed right towards us.  We made the decision to leave at the last minute, which meant getting 124 cats into carriers in the middle of the night and figuring out how they would all fit in our mobile clinic for transport to Dallas.  It was something we hope to never have to repeat.

Mila, Paulie's first girlfriend was loaded up quickly.  Everything went relatively smoothly until we got to Paulie, Jupiter, and Jeepers.  Those 3 would not be caught.  There were at least 5 people in a small room and we couldn't catch any of them.  It was getting later and later and we had to leave.  There was a brief discussion of releasing Mila, but there is no way we could find her easily without unloading most of the cats.  It was heart wrenching but we had to leave them there.  An employee that wasn't evacuating and lived close by promised to check on them.

Luckily there was minimal damage to the shelter and the 3 amigos were safe and healthy.  Ironically, while it was a bit challenging to move them to the new shelter, it wasn't anything like it was when we were trying to catch them for the hurricane.  I wonder how much of that had to do with Jupiter and her plotting to get Paulie to herself?  (haha)

They are still the love birds they have always been.  So much so that it can turn your stomach from the sweetness.  Their bond is so strong, as our many pictures and videos of them show!

Dapper Dan is back from Oso Creek after a 5 day stay.  We are sill getting his bowl movements under control and he's not quite where he needs to be in that department!

He has a lot more energy and is traveling throughout the lobby just like he did before, but he's not out of the woods yet.

Please continue to send good vibes his way!  This little dude is the sweetest and he needs to recover.

In Memoriam - Abby

We're sad to report that our lobby cat, Abby, passed away today. She was one of our first cats at the shelter and was adopted in 2010. She was found last year, weighing only 3lbs. She had a disorder that didn't let her digest food properly and with treatment, we were able to get her weight up to 6.4lbs! She had a grumpy face, but she was so loving! We lovingly referred to her as our old lady cat, as she was almost 15 years old. She loved her treats and would launch herself into your hand for a good head scratch. Sadly, she took a turn for the worst yesterday and we made the difficult decision to let her go. Our hearts are broken.

Our Dapper Dan is in the hospital. He was impacted (full of poop) and needed a procedure to help him out. So far he's doing well, but they are keeping him for observation!  Send good vibes please!
