How To Guide: Introducing Cats

3/29/2024

One of the reasons The Cattery Cat Shelter is so successful is our ability to introduce cats to one another in a seamless manner. Not only does this ensure the cats stay stress-free, but also means that we can give them free rein around the shelter rooms.

If you've already got a cat at home, and you're getting another, you'll want to replicate our stress-free introduction method. We've curated a step-by-step guide for you to complement our TipTalk YouTube video.

What do I need to introduce my cats successfully?

There are a few must-haves when introducing cats to each other. These are:
  1. A cage (or as we like to call them, condos!) of decent size,
  2. A blanket to go over the top of the cage,
  3. Food, water and litter box should also be able to fit inside while leaving your cat room to move,
  4. A bed for your cat to sleep on, with added blankets to make it cosy!

If you don't have a cage or pen fit for purpose at home, we recommend keeping your newest addition in an enclosed room such as the bathroom. Just make sure to spend time with both cats to avoid any jealousy.

Looking to purchase everything you need? We've made a list on our Amazon storefront showcasing the best cages, litter trays, blankets and more! While we earn commission through our storefront, as a non-profit, all the money made goes right back into helping our cats get all the treatment they need before they find their forever homes.

How long should my cats be separated for?

We recommend keeping the cats in this introduction phase for up to 4 weeks. The longer you can give your pets to adjust, the more successful the integration will be.
