Welcome to The Cattery Cat Shelter. We're a no-kill, cage free shelter based in Corpus Christi, TX, and now we're bringing you a weekly blog to keep you up to date on everything you need to know.

We'll be taking some of your most-asked questions, as well as giving you a rundown of tricks and tips on keeping your feline friend happy.

Feline Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Cat Shelter?

A cat shelter is typically a charitable organization with a focus on caring for cats of all ages. Cats in a no-kill cat shelter will stay there until they're adopted to their forever home.
Cat shelters such as The Cattery Cat Shelter are reliant upon donations of all kinds to stay running. This includes donations of cat food, old bedding, and monetary contributions when available.

Are your cats really cage free?

Yes! All of our cats are allowed to roam freely within their designated rooms after they've been properly introduced to the rest of our feline friends. You'll see a kitty in a cage is during this introduction/quarantine period, which varies depending on how well the cat acclimates and if they show social tendencies. However, on average, this can take around 5 days.
Other times a cat might be kept in an enclosure is if they're sick. This is to give them their privacy and time to heal, as well as to keep the sickness from spreading to the other kitty residents.

What toy do cats like?

While cats love a variety of different toys, from cat trees to fake mice, we have a soft spot in our heart for the Potorama Flopping Fish. Not only does this interactive toy flop and wiggle like a real fish, but it hones in on all those natural hunting instincts for your feline friend. Available in a variety of fish including: rainbow trout, koi and gemfish.

How to make a cat toy on a budget?

If you're feeling the need to stick to a budget in 2024, making a cat toy couldn't be easier. Any combination of the below could cause hours of fun for your feline friends:
  1. Aluminium foil; whether in a ball or a sheet, there are hours of fun to be had.
  2. Scraps of yarn; tie them together for a colorful string that your cat will love to chase! (used under human supervision only!)
  3. Cardboard box; if they fits, they will sits.
  4. Cloth mice; if you have the creative gene, some fabric, a small bit of string and some stuffing. Happy sewing!
  5. A fort; cat's often like enclosed spaces, so take an old blanket, some pillows, and build a little fort - you'll both enjoy it, promise.

How do I know if my cat's happy?

Here's what to look out for to make sure your feline friend is happy and living their best life:
  • a raised tail as they strut their stuff is a sure tell that you have a happy cat on your paws.
  • your cat shows you their tummy; this exposure of their most vulnerable part shows just how much your kitty trusts you.
  • ears facing forward is a sign that your cat is relaxed and happy.
If these FAQs and tips aren't enough for you, though, don't forget to follow us over on TikTok for daily videos and weekly lives at 7pm CST.
