The Surprising Healing Power of Cats
Spend enough time around cats, and you’ll begin to notice something: they have a way of making us feel better without saying a word.
Here at the shelter, we witness it daily. A volunteer, worn down by a long workweek, melts into a quiet smile the moment a cat settles into their lap. A nervous adopter, unsure and hesitant, breathes a little easier as a gentle paw reaches out to greet them. A child who struggles to sit still calms as they slowly brush through soft fur, focusing only on the simple rhythm of care.
This isn’t just a feeling — there’s real science behind the quiet magic cats offer.
Here are a few ways cats help support our well-being:
  • Purring can promote healing.
A cat's purr vibrates at a frequency between 25 and 150 Hertz — a range that studies have linked to healing of bones, muscles, and tissues. Many researchers believe that this natural sound may help reduce pain and inflammation while promoting recovery.
  • They lower stress and anxiety.
The simple act of petting a cat can reduce levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, while increasing serotonin and dopamine, which promote feelings of happiness and calm.
  • Heart health gets a boost.
Studies have shown that cat owners may have a reduced risk of heart attacks and strokes. The calming presence of a cat may help lower blood pressure and contribute to long-term cardiovascular health.
  • They help reduce loneliness.
For many people, especially those living alone, cats provide steady companionship. Their presence offers comfort, routine, and the kind of quiet company that makes a house feel like home.
  • They create mindfulness.
Cats live entirely in the present moment — and when we're with them, we often do too. Watching a cat nap in a sunny spot or chase a wiggling string invites us to pause, breathe, and simply be.
  • Support for children with anxiety or special needs.
Children who struggle with anxiety, sensory issues, or emotional regulation often find comfort in the gentle, nonjudgmental presence of a cat. The predictability and softness of feline companionship can provide a safe space to relax and connect.
Cats don’t ask for much. They don’t offer advice or try to fix anything. They simply sit with us — in the heavy moments, the joyful ones, and everything in between. And somehow, in that quiet companionship, they help us heal.
Every day at the shelter, we see these small miracles unfold. And for those who open their hearts to a cat, the healing often continues for many years to come.
